Kali Classes
in
Calgary & Okotoks

Structured Filipino Martial Arts classes for teens and adults. Train Kali, Arnis, Eskrima, stick fighting, footwork, timing, striking, close-range skills, and practical self-defence.

What to Expect in Class

Classes begin with a bow-in and joint-mobility warm-up, followed by striking, blocking, partner work, and flow drills. Guro Jonn generally finishes with sparring or pressure testing, then a bow-out and a short group reflection. New and experienced students usually train together.

Warm-Up & Movement

Begin with joint mobility to prepare for stick work. Develop footwork and body mechanics that support balance, positioning, and controlled movement.

Technical Training

Start with how to hold and swing a stick, then build striking angles and blocking skills. Repeated practice and flow drills develop coordination, sensitivity, and control.

Partner Drills

Partner drills start slowly, with clear communication and room to ask questions or reduce the pace. Sparring and pressure testing are introduced early to explore timing, natural reactions, and what works.

Who Can Join?

Classes welcome new and experienced students in a shared learning environment. Guro Jonn values consistent effort, curiosity, respect for training partners, and a willingness to keep learning.

Beginners

No martial arts experience or high level of fitness is needed to begin. Start with stick handling, striking, blocking, footwork, and body mechanics, with guidance as you learn.

Teens & Adults

Adults and younger students train together. Guro Jonn suggests around age 12 as a useful starting point for dedicated FMA training, with maturity and responsible handling of training tools essential. Contact him to discuss suitability.

Experienced Students

Explore a blend of Filipino Martial Arts through single stick, double stick, empty-hand, and training-blade work. Train alongside students of different experience levels in a community that helps each other improve.

What to Bring

Wear comfortable training clothes and bring water. The club has sticks and training gear for new students, so you do not need to buy equipment to try a class. Bring your own training gear if you have it, and ask Guro Jonn about uniform arrangements.
